MTA ANNOUCES NEW PRESIDENT

The Manitoba Trucking Association Board of Directors elected Tom Payne, Jr., of Payne Transportation LP, as its new president at a board meeting on June 22.

Payne will be taking over the reins from outgoing President, Susan Snyder of Searcy Trucking Ltd. Snyder has resigned her position for family reasons; however, she has greatly enjoyed her tenure as MTA president. “There are some really great people associated with the Manitoba Trucking Association, and I feel privileged to have worked with them. At the same time, I am looking forward to this new and very exciting chapter in my life. I know that Tom will make an excellent president, and I hope that his time as president is as enjoyable as mine was.”

On his part, Tom Payne is looking forward to his upcoming role as MTA president. “We are turning a corner economically and face a number of challenges as we move ahead. With challenge, though, is opportunity, and I think that we are well-positioned to take advantage of those opportunities in our industry. There has been a lot of work going on with the Manitoba Trucking Association, and I am very excited to serve in the role of President with a great team that shares our vision and goals.

Tom Payne Jr. Appointed President and General Manager.

June 11, 2008

Today, Murray Mullen of Mullen Group Inc. announced that Tom Payne Jr. is the new President and General Manager of Payne Transportation LP.  Tom Jr. will take over the company he helped build with his father, Tom Sr., who announced his retirement (posted here) last month.

Tom has been with Payne Transportation since it first started, coming over from Tri Line with his father. Tom has been the Vice-President and general Manager since inception and has been managing most of the day-to-day operations for the past few years.

Congratulations Tom!

There is no decision that is more important to any organization than that of determining who will lead the organization. It is with great pleasure that I announced today that Tom Payne Jr. will assume the role of President of Payne Transportation. Tom Jr. has earned the respect of his peers, has an in depth understanding of the trucking industry and is totally committed to growing the Payne brand.

Tom Jr. we have worked together for many years now and you have earned the right to lead Payne Transportation. I look forward to working with you and the entire Payne team for many years to come. Congratulations.

Tom Payne Sr. Announces Retirement

After more than 40 years in the trucking industry, Tom Payne Sr. has announced his retirement effective the end of May.  Tom spent most of that time at Tri-Line, the last 9 years as its president.  However in 2000, Tom left Tri-Line for personal reasons and started up his own company in partnership with Mullen Transportation based in Aldersyde, AB.

Over the past 8 years, he has created a first class company that has flourished under his leadership. In 2004, Tom was nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year.  And in 2005, he undertook the construction of our new head office.

Over the past few years, Tom, and his wife Gail, have been able to enjoy the fruits of their labour as they winter in Arizona and race their thoroughbred horses.  Tom will still pop into the office from time to time to chat with the drivers and staff.  Best of luck in retirement Tom, you’ve earned it.

After a long and distinguished career covering some 45 years Tom Sr. announces his retirement.  I personally have known Tom for many years dating back to his earlier days at Tri Line Freight Systems and was always impressed by his commitment to the trucking industry and to his people, whether they be company employees or owner/operators.  To Tom it made no difference.  Everyone on his team was treated with the utmost respect.

This explains why we invested alongside Tom when he left Tri-line and started Payne Transportation eight years ago.  I knew from the start that Tom would create a winning organization. And he did.  Tom, I know I speak on behalf of everyone that had the opportunity to work with you that we thank you for everything you have accomplished and shared with us.  We all wish you the best of health, happiness and enjoyment in your new career – Retirement.  We hear you have lots to do.  Of course you will be always welcome at the Payne Group and your continuing involvement as a Director of Payne along with myself is most appreciated.

Thanks

Mullen acquires Payne Transportation Inc.

ALDERSYDE, AB, June 14 /CNW/ – Mullen Transportation Inc. (“Mullen” and/or “the Company”) announced today that it has closed its acquisition of Payne Transportation Inc. (“Payne”). Mullen was an initial investor in Payne holding a 45 percent interest. The consideration for Mullen’s acquisition of the balance of the 55 percent of Payne will be satisfied with $1.5 million of cash and 100,000 common shares of Mullen.

“Our original investment in Payne has far exceeded our expectations. Payne is an outstanding company that strengthens our position in both the long-haul van and flatdeck businesses. I am also extremely pleased that Mr. Tom Payne and the other senior management have agreed to remain with Payne to oversee its ongoing operations,” said Murray Mullen, Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer.

Payne is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and operates a fleet of approximately 220 owner-operated power units and 400 trailers. Payne focuses on the transportation of truckload and less-than-truckload general freight across Canada and into the United States from its head office in Winnipeg and its terminals across Canada. Payne will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mullen.

“The acquisition of Payne comes at a time when we are seeing a strong demand for trucking services, particularly in western Canada. This acquisition capitalizes on the opportunities we see in trucking and is consistent with our current growth strategy of expanding our trucking segment. In the current economic climate we are optimistic that Payne will be able to sustain or even increase its annual revenues from its 2004 level of approximately $40.0 million and that operating margins approaching 10 percent can be achieved,” stated Stephen Lockwood, President and Co-Chief Executive Officer.
